Homosexuality and the SCOTUS Ruling

A message to Christians regarding homosexuality in a world full of misdirection and political self-interests. The logic of the gospel both confronts and comforts.

Many voices ring out in response to the SCOTUS ruling. They are stuffed with right-wing legal jargon, libertarian individualism, or the language of left-wing social engineering. The gospel stands apart from and in response to all these voices. The logic of the gospel is simple and elegant and addresses homosexuals as human beings made in God’s image.

Without further introduction, the logic of the gospel:

(1.) God is our Creator. Gender and sexuality are subject to his authoritative purposes. His purposes are revealed in his commands. The penalty for breaking his commands is death. A sinner is someone who has broken his commands, sin is commandment-breaking.

(2.) God has beautifully chosen to give sinners a way to escape both their sin and its penalty. Jesus Christ lived a life of righteousness to replace our sin and teach us how to live. He bled and died to pay the penalty for sin. He rose from the dead so that sinners might have hope of a new life without sin.

(3.) Homosexuality is sin, just like any other violation of God’s will, like stealing, coveting, false worship, heterosexual lusts, etc. It leads to death and alienation from God. But God has shown his love for sinners in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. For anyone who trusts in Christ in the empowering help of the Spirit, they enjoy the benefits of Christ’s life and death and resurrection, and are washed clean from the corruption of guilt and shame.

This is the logic of the gospel.

The pressing issue of homosexuality is not states’ rights. The issue is not the government’s right to legislate morality. The issue is not social justice or a brave new world. The issue is communion with God.

Homosexual behavior dishonors God and destroys the lives of men and women. It intensifies guilt, it further mars God’s image in the soul of man, and it removes all hope of peace and happiness from a person’s life.

Do not assume that anyone in our modern culture is aware of or actively engaged in thinking along these lines. It is the nature of man to neglect this way of thinking, or to discount its importance, or to want to leave it as an unspoken assumption. There are many who hold this line, but don’t assume it! Many hold the line, but how many of them have become distracted by the less-pressing political issues!

The gospel is the power of God for salvation to all who believe. God is not interested in restoring the American Republic, nor is he interested in advancing a right wing social agenda, nor is he interested in standing up for the individual’s right to live life however a person chooses. God is at work relentlessly saving sinners. The means he has chosen is the confessional proclamation of eternal truth from his Word in churches throughout the nation. Let us engage in or support it as God gives gift and opportunity.
